Fake Worship

When Worshipping Is Not For Real

"Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him."
Matthew 2:2 (NKJV)

The Christmas Story Revisited

"Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 'Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.' When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him."
Matthew 2:1-3 (NKJV)

The Critical Question

"The revelation of Jesus as King always demands a response, and that response will determine whether we are fake or real in our worship."
  • Same message about the same King
  • Two completely different responses
  • Both called "worship"
  • One joyful, one troubled
  • One led to surrender, one to destruction

Real Worship

The Example of the Wise Men

Real Worship Begins with Hunger

  • Genuine, serious hunger to know, meet, and discover the King
  • Not casual seekers or merely being religious
  • Wanted to meet Him personally, not just hear about Him
  • Made an extraordinarily long journey from Persia
  • Left everything behind because they were hungry
"They were genuinely hungry for the revelation of Jesus Christ"

Real Worship Pursues at Great Cost

Focused Pursuit

  • Saw His star among countless stars
  • Ignored everything else
  • Fixed their eyes exclusively on Jesus
  • Where your focus is reveals your worship

Willing to Pay the Price

  • Journey was long and expensive
  • Nothing was too much
  • No price was too great
  • Reordered entire lives around the King

Real Worship Ends in Surrender

"And when they had come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh."
Matthew 2:11 (NKJV)
  • They bowed down - surrendered themselves
  • Brought their gifts - honored Him with their treasures
  • "These no longer belong to us - they are Yours"
  • "You are King, we're not. You are Lord, we're not"
"Anything short of surrender comes short of worship"

Fake Worship

The Example of King Herod

Fake Worship: Troubled by Jesus's Kingship

"When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled."
Matthew 2:3
  • Not joyful, not excited, not glad - troubled
  • Fake worshipers love Jesus as Savior, Healer, Forgiver
  • But they struggle with Jesus as King and Lord
  • Kingship demands surrender of themselves
  • Means abdicating the throne of their own lives
  • Can no longer be "the decider in chief"

Five Signs of Fake Worship

  • Troubled by lordship - struggle with control and surrender
  • Information without transformation - want knowledge but no change
  • Delegate the hard work - only worship when it's easy
  • Worship with the crowd - no personal relationship or convictions
  • Simply pretending - honor with lips, but heart is far away

The Devastating Truth

"Worship without surrender is simply an attempt to manage God"
  • We sing, pray, attend church, but still keep control
  • We're still on the throne
  • We want God close enough to bless us
  • But not close enough to confront or change us
  • We've made God a consultant, not the King

You Cannot Worship the Person You're Trying to Manage

The Three-Part Invitation

Stop Trying to Manage God

That's fake worship

Step Off the Throne - He is King

That's real worship

Lay Down Control and Trust Him

That's real worship

Prayer Points

Moving from Fake to Real Worship

Prayer for Genuine Hunger

Father God, I ask for a genuine hunger for Jesus that goes beyond religious formality. Like the wise men who left Persia and traveled far to meet the King, give me a heart that is not satisfied with secondhand information about Jesus. I don't want to be a casual seeker; I want to be a serious seeker hungry for truth. Holy Spirit, stir up within me an insatiable appetite for the presence of Jesus. Every encounter with Jesus should make me hunger for more.
Matthew 2:2; John 14:6

Prayer for Focused Pursuit

Lord Jesus, in a world with countless distractions—ambitions, goals, dreams, relationships, money, status—help me to identify Your star and focus exclusively on You. The wise men saw many stars in the heavens, but they ignored all the others when they identified His star. Father, I confess that I have allowed many things to absorb my attention. Today I choose to fix my eyes on Jesus. When I fix my eyes on You, it brings peace, hope, power, and true fulfillment.
Hebrews 12:1-2; Matthew 6:21

Prayer for Complete Surrender

Heavenly Father, the defining mark of true worship is surrender. When the wise men found Jesus, they bowed down. I present my body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You. I confess that there are areas where I have been troubled by Your kingship because I know it demands that I surrender control. Today, I choose to abdicate the throne of my life. I surrender my time, treasure, gifts, finances, relationships, career—every single area. You are King; I'm not. You are Lord; I'm not.
Romans 12:1; Matthew 2:11

Prayer for Transformation, Not Just Information

Father God, I confess that like Herod, there have been times when I inquired and wanted information about You, but never truly intended for that information to transform me. Today I repent of this fake worship. Transform me by the renewing of my mind. Real worshipers bow and surrender, inviting You to have Your way. I don't want to remain the same. I want to change more and more into the image of Christ. Let the information concerning Jesus produce transformation in my life.
Romans 12:2; James 1:22

Prayer to Stop Managing God

Heavenly Father, worship without surrender is simply an attempt to manage You. I confess that I have been guilty of trying to manage You instead of worship You. I have said, "God, bless my plans, but don't change them. God, heal me, but don't touch this part." I have made You a consultant instead of recognizing You as King. I cannot worship the person I'm trying to manage. Today I stop negotiating with You because You do not negotiate Your kingship. I bow and surrender to You. I step off the throne because You are King.
John 4:23-24; Matthew 2:11

Prayer for Personal Conviction

Lord Jesus, I don't want to be like those who worship only because others are doing it—those who are part of the crowd but have no personal relationship or personal convictions. I want my worship to flow from deep personal conviction and intimate relationship with You, not from what's popular or who's around me. Whether anyone else worships or not, whether friends stay or leave, let me worship You because I know You personally and am motivated from within by the Holy Spirit.
John 4:23-24

Prayer for Obedience That Demonstrates Love

Father, Jesus declared, "These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me." I don't want to be guilty of honoring You with words while my heart remains far from You. Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments." True worship will be demonstrated in my works of obedience. I will show my faith by my works. Let my worship be real, flowing from my heart and evidenced in my obedience, my love for others, and my works of righteousness.
John 14:15; Matthew 15:8; James 2:18

Prayer for Honoring God with Our Treasures

Lord, the wise men didn't come to Jesus empty-handed. They brought their gifts and worshiped Him with their treasures—gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Jesus, You said, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Our whole life is to be a gift to You because You gave Your whole life for us. Father, I present my body as a living sacrifice. I honor You not just with words but with the gift of my surrendered heart, my time, my talents, and my treasures.
Matthew 2:11; Matthew 6:21; Romans 12:1

Is Your Worship Real or Fake?

"Worship is not measured by how loudly we sing but by how deeply we surrender"
  • Jesus is both a great King who deserves our surrender
  • And a humble, servant King who rules with grace and mercy
  • He loves us more than we love ourselves
  • We can surrender to Him because He is trustworthy
  • The revelation of Jesus as King demands our response

Not Debate, Not Delay, But Surrender
